Whats Up Today

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for your participation in the tech class this summer. I have enjoyed doing this class more than you know, and especially meeting other teachers! As an MAT grad, I believe the MAT is a GREAT program, and that you are a part of a select group of math teachers tough enough to give up your summer and tackle challenging content! For those of you finishing up the first year, STICK WITH IT!

I sincerely hope that you found GeoGebra useful, and that you find a way to use GeoGebra in your classes! It would be a shame to spend the summer working with it and not use it!

Please consider attending one of the monthy Saturday morning Teachers Teaching with Technology User Groups meeting held at Madeira. There is no cost to attend! We discuss ways to incoporate all sorts of technology: SMART Boards, handheld technology, Navigator, and other things including GeoGebra!  Come and share what you do in your classes to incorporate technology! I will include all of you in emails announcing the meetings.

Of course, please do not hesitate to drop me an email at sphelps@madeiracityschools.org if you have questions about something you are trying to do with GeoGebra or about other technologies!

For those of your thinking about a project, I would be more than willing to be an advisor if you need one! Just let me know!

Thanks again, have a GREAT YEAR, please keep in touch, and I hope I get to see you all sometime during the year!

Steve

1. Dynamic Investigations for Geometry

Thursday, July 31

Work Day! Get things linked online! There are only three more class days after today!

Tuesday, July 29

Geometry Practice Test Mathlets

Question 1     Question 2     Question 3    Question 4     Question 6(says 5, but really 6)

Question 8     Question 11   Question 13   Question 14

Enthusiast's 2

Thursday, July 24

1. Dynamic Investigations

2. Work Day

3. I will not be here on Tuesday, so check this page for things to do!

Tuesday, July 22

1. Dynamic Investigations

2. Work Day

IMPORTANT REMINDER!

We need to start thinking about some things. There are two parts to the dynamic worksheets you are creating:

  1. They are for other teachers to use! That means they should address content that most teachers teach, they should be appealling to students and teachers alike, and they should be easy to use!
  2. They are for YOU to use and you are to reflect on their use in this wiki! (this "use and reflect" thing is a College of Education requirement). Any ideas of the reflection part of the wiki?

2. Work Day!

  • Take care of your business!

2. Work Day.

3. Some Useful Files for doing HTML thing

Be certain to click on the EDIT tab at the top, then click on the SOURCE button to view the source.

4. NO TECH CLASS TUESDAY! MEET AGAIN ON THURSDAY!

Tuesday, July 8

1. Dynamic Investigations!

These are MUST DO investigations for Dr. Minda and the Linear Algebra class.

We will discuss these after the first 45 minutes!

2. Work Day for what is left!

3. No Tech Class Next Tuesday!

Thursday, July 3

1. Two reminders about Quality Guidelines for Mathlets

REMEMBER! Big Fonts, Thick Lines, Big Points, and Colors (but not crazy colors).

2. Short Dynamic Investigations

3. IDEAS for some Geometry Class Dynamic Worksheets!

4. WORK DAY!

Just a note...if you feel the need to have a printed worksheet accompany your Dynamic Mathlet, that is certainly OK (in fact, it might be a good idea to at least have ONE of your Dynamic Mathlet be accompanied by a printed worksheet). We can upload them to the GeoGebra Upload Manager and link to them that way.

Tuesday, July 1

1. Two reminders about Quality Guidelines for Mathlets

2. Some Examples.

From experience with students, they like Big Fonts, Thick Lines, Big Points,

and Colors (but not crazy colors). Here are a couple of mathlets that I used with my students

and tried to take their suggestions.

Please! Feel free to critique these mathlets in light of the Guidelines for Creating Dynamic Worksheets.

Please! Feel free to take these and modify these to suit your needs!

3. Dynamic Investigations:

4. GeoGebra Proficiencies: Try using these simple commands. If you have worked through the dynamic investigations, you will have a good feel for these commands! You may need to refer to the Online Help under the HELP Menu for...well..help, of course.

  • CURVE[]
  • MIDPOINT[]
  • FUNCTION[]
  • ANGLEBISECTOR[]
  • DILATE[]
  • SEQUENCE[]

Thursday, June 26

1. Two reminders about Quality Guidelines for Mathlets

2. Dynamic Investigations:

3. You should be finished with the Introduction to GeoGebra after today (or at least by next week)

4. GeoGebra Proficiencies.

  • Use the FUNCTION[ f(x),a,b] command to restrict the domain of functions.
  • Make a function that uses sliders.

5. Go to the GeoGebra Help Document and look at Chapter 4 (in particular, Section 4.3) which is all about the Algebra Input line. FOr those of you who teach Pre-Calc, or Calculus, or Algebra 2, you should read about how to graph parametric equations and other things that you might need.

Tuesday, June 24

Please do the following things before you try other stuff. The order you do these things does not matter.

1. Please read this article about creating good mathlets. I copied the "good stuff" for you, but there are some examples of dynamic worksheets that are imbedded in the article. Pay close attention to the QUALITLY GUIDELINES FOR MATHLETS! They are research-based guidelines that we should follow when creating our mathlets.

2. Please do the following dynamic investigations:

3. GeoGebra Proficiencies:

4. Be thinking of some topics for Dynamic Worksheets (and how you might incorporate the Quality Guidelines for Mathletes). Remember! 5-7 for College of Education, 3-5 for the Geometry Course, and 2-3 for the Linear Algebra Course! More importantly, they should be something that YOU will use during the year!

5. Need an MAT Project? How about Dynamic GeoGebra Investigations for the Geometry Class or the Linear Algebra Class?

Thursday, June 19

Please do the following things before you try other stuff:

1. Try to do the suggested edits on the Practice Page. Of course, only one of you can do this at a time. Just try them sometime before next Tuesday.

2. Do these short dynamic investigations:

(The constructions with a limited toolbar idea came from THIS ARTICLE)

3. Be certain you can work with all the transformation tools in GeoGebra:

  • Mirror Object at Line
  • Mirror Object at Point
  • Rotate Object Around Point by an Angle
  • Translate Object by Vector
  • DIlate Object from Point by Factor

4. Try and use a Slider

5. Try and change the Properties of points and lines.
